The cybersecurity profession can create a lifetime of opportunities and one CISSP realized just how much it impacted his life, so he is giving back by volunteering through his ISC2 chapter and potentially impacting thousands of lives through access to Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) certification.

Trevor Louis, CISSP, is an active ISC2 London Chapter volunteer, who is not only building his own career; but also helping create opportunities for the next generation of cybersecurity professionals around the world.

A Journey Defined by Determination

Trevor Louis didn’t grow up surrounded by technology. In fact, his early life was marked by hardship, and for years, computers weren’t even part of his world. Growing up as an orphan in children’s homes and unable to read and write until he was an adult, cybersecurity wasn’t something he could have imagined for his future. Determination and a willingness to learn changed the trajectory of his life.

Through self-study, Louis gradually entered the IT field. His first steps weren’t through a traditional degree path, but through certifications, beginning with early foundational credentials. These gave him a structured way to learn, prove his knowledge, and build confidence.

The Turning Point: CISSP Certification

Louis’s career trajectory shifted when he discovered ISC2 and the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification.

“To me, CISSP was the gold standard,” Louis said. “Earning the CISSP wasn’t easy. It requires deep study, experience, and commitment. But the impact was immediate.”

Louis says that he went from pursuing job opportunities to being approached by employers, his credibility in the industry increased significantly, and new leadership opportunities opened up for him.

Louis now advises others to follow a similar path starting with foundational certifications like Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) and building toward advanced credentials like CISSP.

Finding Community Through the ISC2 London Chapter

Despite his professional growth, Louis initially felt intimidated about joining the ISC2 London Chapter.

“I walked into the room and thought ‘These are all experts. Do I really belong here?’”

Despite his worries, he found a welcoming, supportive community and his experience changed everything. Louis became an active volunteer, inspired by the dedication of fellow members. He began focusing on:

  • Mentorship for aspiring professionals
  • Outreach to underrepresented communities
  • Expanding access to cybersecurity education for young people

For Louis, volunteering wasn’t just about giving back, it was deeply personal.

“My passion for helping others comes from where I started,” he said.

Turning Personal Purpose into Global Impact

Louis’s commitment to inclusion and opportunity has extended far beyond his ISC2 London Chapter.

One of his most significant achievements has been helping facilitate a partnership between ISC2 and the Rwandan government. Through this advocacy effort, a formal collaboration was established allowing thousands of Rwandans to gain access to cybersecurity training and a pathway to earn the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) certification.

This initiative is more than workforce development; it’s opening doors for individuals who may not otherwise have access to traditional education pathways. Louis understands this firsthand.

“Certifications create another route. Not everyone can go to university, but they can still build a career,” he said.

The Power of Certification as an Equalizer

Louis’s story reinforces a powerful truth: cybersecurity certifications aren’t just credentials; they’re catalysts.

They provide:

  • Accessible entry points into the industry
  • Structured learning pathways
  • Globally recognized validation of skills

For individuals facing financial, educational, or geographic barriers, certifications can level the playing field and provide life-changing opportunities. Combining certifications with community through ISC2 chapters creates a powerful network of professionals committed to lifting others up.

Leadership, Service, and Giving Back

Louis’s influence continues to grow.

In addition to his volunteer work with the London Chapter, he has served on ISC2 committees, including roles supporting governance and professional standards. Through his various roles, he contributes to shaping the future of the organization and the cybersecurity profession.

But for Louis, the mission remains simple: “Help the next person succeed.”

Build Your Own Impact Story

Trevor Louis’s journey shows what’s possible when resilience, certification, and community come together. His story is a reminder that cybersecurity is not just about technology, it’s about people. Alongside ISC2 chapters, every member has the opportunity to make a difference in their own backyard or across the globe.
