(ISC)² Recognized by HMRC as Approved Professional Organization
Professional Organizations and Learned Societies status brings tax benefits for members and affirms the value of (ISC)² membership and certification to the UK economy
London, UK, July 31, 2019 – (ISC)² – the world’s largest nonprofit membership association of certified cybersecurity professionals – announced that it has been granted Approved Professional Organizations and Learned Societies status by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority. This status recognizes (ISC)² among a select number of essential professional societies and bodies that share or advance professional knowledge, maintain or improve professional conduct and competence, or protect members from claims made against them while doing their job. It also allows UK members of (ISC)² to claim tax relief on their annual maintenance fee (AMF).
The inclusion of (ISC)² on the list of approved bodies, which has been backdated to April 6, 2019, is recognition of the ongoing work of members and the organization itself to inspire a safe and secure cyber world. The status awarded by the HMRC validates the efforts of (ISC)² to advance cybersecurity knowledge and skills in the UK through training, certification and through the development of its Common Body of Knowledge (CBK).
“This recognition from HMRC comes at a critical time for the UK digital economy. At a time when digital and business transformation is rife, it reflects the importance being placed on cybersecurity skills creation and development at all levels of business, as well as in the public sector. Our members invest in their cybersecurity skills development in many ways – with time, money and effort. Membership of (ISC)² is an important component of that investment, and the new status afforded by HMRC will make that commitment more cost-effective for our UK tax-paying members and their employers,” said Deshini Newman, Managing Director EMEA at (ISC)².
The learned societies and professional associations on the list are predominantly nonprofit organizations such as industry bodies, charter organizations and livery companies, as well as independent member associations that exist to raise standards and help their members. Learned societies are usually subject-specific while professional associations are profession-specific by their nature.
