(ISC)² Garfield and the Center for Cyber Safety and Education Team Up to Keep Children Safe Online

New Program Featuring Garfield and Friends Closes the Gap in Cyber Safety Education 


Clearwater, Fla., Sept. 8, 2016 – Children have a new advocate to help them navigate the dangers of online life – Garfield. Paws, Inc. and the Center for Cyber Safety and Education have teamed up to develop cartoons, comic books, posters, trading cards, stickers, and other materials to help educators and parents teach children how to protect themselves online.  

According to the Center’s Children’s Internet Usage Study released in April, 87 percent of children in grades four to eight reported that they have learned about safe internet behavior at home or school. At the same time, 29 percent admitted to having used the internet in a way in which their parents would not approve.

To close this gap, every three to four months, the Center will release new online and print Garfield materials that tackle different cyber safety issues. The first lesson, to be part of a new Educator’s Kit, will focus on privacy. Future lessons will address the dangers of posting online, etiquette, cyberbullying, and more.

The Educator’s Kit, which the Center will unveil next week at the 6th annual (ISC)2 Security Congress, contains everything a teacher or group leader would need to teach an internet safety lesson to a group of students: a special Garfield cartoon and handouts, such as classroom wall posters, 30 sets of activity comic books, trading cards, a letter to parents, webcam privacy cling-ons, “I Am Cyber Safe” wearable stickers, and much more. Pat Craven, director for the Center, comments, “Children are still making alarming choices online, despite having a level of awareness of the dangers. Parents and educators clearly need more effective tools to reach kids about the consequences of their online choices. Garfield has universal appeal and credibility that will resonate with children.”

Garfield creator Jim Davis said, “We are delighted to collaborate with the Center. Cyber security is a global issue, and Garfield has global reach. As a cartoon, he also has the ability to make a complex topic like cyber safety easy for children to understand. The Center has the expertise, track record and passion to make a profound difference.”

The Garfield partnership is part of the Center’s latest enhancement to its Safe and Secure Online program. Safe and Secure Online offers tips and resources to children, parents, educators and seniors that draw from the expertise of  (ISC)2 members, the pre-eminent cybersecurity experts in the world. Since its inception in 2006, Safe and Secure Online has helped 75,000 children, parents and senior citizens become responsible digital citizens.

Mr. Craven concluded, “Our mission is to help as many people as possible around the world become cyber-safe. As we approach National Cyber Security Awareness Month, I am confident Garfield will help us turn the tide toward a more security-conscious culture.”
