More than 1,500 cybersecurity professionals collectively highlight the importance and value they place in the certifications they hold, and how they have positively impacted and shaped the direction of their career progression and opportunities.

The latest research report from ISC2 – The Value of Cybersecurity Certifications – takes a deep dive into professional certifications and career value, examining the impact that having a cybersecurity certification can have on an individual’s path into a cybersecurity career, their subsequent career progression, skills development, workplace credibility and more. The findings are based on the responses of 1,533 cybersecurity professionals across Canada, Germany, India, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S., who held at least one vendor-neutral certification between December 2025 and January 2026.

The Impact of Certifications

Respondents see cybersecurity certifications not simply as credentials, but as critical, long-term assets. They provide both immediate and sustained benefits, enabling professionals to build skills, demonstrate capability and adapt to the changing demands of the cybersecurity landscape.

Certifications are also shown to deliver tangible outcomes. A significant proportion of respondents reported improvements in technical knowledge, job performance and credibility with peers and employers. Many also link certifications to salary increases, promotions and improved economic mobility.

Other key findings in the report include:

  • Certifications rank alongside hands-on experience as one of the most impactful career accelerators, with 67% of respondents citing vendor-neutral credentials as very impactful, alongside 65% citing vendor-specific as very impactful.
  • Professionals use both vendor-neutral and vendor-specific certifications together, with 71% holding both types, reflecting their complementary roles.
  • Certifications deliver measurable benefits, including enhanced knowledge, increased credibility and improved earning potential and career mobility.

Importantly, respondents underscore that certifications retain their value across all career stages. Rather than diminishing, their impact evolves alongside promotions, career transitions and specialisation. Professionals widely recognize this value, with strong levels of personal pride and continued investment in maintaining certifications over time.
