For over 20 years, I've navigated the technology world, where I found both my passion and my refuge. With autism, I masked my true self, fearing judgment and misunderstanding. Technology wasn't just a job; it was my sanctuary, a place where my skills could shine without the pressure to 'fit in'.

Early in my career, I focused on showcasing my technical prowess, which helped me secure my place in the industry. However, as leadership roles loomed, doubts about my social skills surfaced. Fortunately, I found an ally in a supportive manager and friend who not only accepted me but also championed my potential.

Seeking Out Guidance

Emboldened by this support, I embraced my identity and sought mentorship from executive leaders, which further boosted my confidence. This journey led me to cybersecurity – a field that ignited a hidden passion within me, one I couldn't ignore. With seven months of preparation and the encouragement of my mentor, who had recently passed the same exam, I achieved my CISSP certification on my first attempt.

Inspired by this success, my mentor urged me to share my story with our department. Before doubt could set in, he had already scheduled the meeting. This act of faith from him was the final push I needed to openly discuss my autism and its impact on my career.

Differences are Strengths

Today, I channel my unique strengths into advocating for cybersecurity awareness, emphasizing the role each of us plays in creating a safer digital world for our organizations and the families we cherish. My journey has taught me that our differences are not just obstacles but sources of extraordinary strength. I stand now, not just as a cyber defender, but as a beacon for those who struggle to find their place, showing that with authenticity and courage, we can all rise to lead and inspire. Here's to a future where we all embrace our true selves and use them to make a profound impact.
