From Uncharted Territory to Forging a Secure Path: My Cybersecurity Story
Picture this: leaving everything you know behind, with a one-way ticket to the U.S., a heart buzzing with equal parts excitement and a thrilling sense of the unknown. That was my leap. This resonates with the stories of many women who've dared to dream big.
Stepping into the world after graduation, armed with a master's degree, felt like standing at the edge of vast, uncharted territory. Like many women's journeys, mine wasn't a straight line but a series of deliberate steps, each building upon the last.
My first role served as a boot camp. Being an entry-level cybersecurity engineer with a Fortune 500 company in the finance industry was a crucial foundation. It was about taking the textbooks and making them real, understanding the delicate balance between technology and human trust. Navigating a space where I was often the only woman wasn't always easy, but it taught me something crucial: your voice matters, your skills speak volumes, and a willingness to learn is your superpower. I poured myself into every project, every challenge.
Hard Work Recognised
The promotion that followed wasn't just a new title; it was an opportunity to lead and build a team, not just a workforce. As a woman, I understood the importance of creating a space where everyone felt valued and empowered. I focused on building strong relationships, encouraging open communication, along with ensuring that every team member had the resources and support they needed to succeed.
My desire to grow, to explore, was relentless. I craved bigger challenges and a broader canvas. This led me to a pivotal transition: a move to a prestigious global professional services firm as a senior cybersecurity consultant. This shift was transformative. Transitioning to diverse industries rapidly expanded my skillset. Each project became an exercise in adaptability, solidifying my understanding that cybersecurity success hinges on comprehending the human element of business. Achieving industry certifications, including those from ISC2, put me on the path of continuous learning, a trait that’s especially important in the ever-evolving world of tech.
Today's Opportunities
Today, as a manager working in data protection and privacy, my role extends beyond technical prowess; it's about igniting passion within my team, empowering them to lead and fostering a culture of proactive security. I nurture potential, bridge technical solutions with human understanding and equip them to innovate. Our success is measured by the trust we build and the future we protect.
Looking back on my eight-year journey, I'm struck by the power of resilience and the importance of human connection. For women, resilience is often honed through navigating societal expectations and breaking down barriers. My career isn't just about technical achievements; it's about building bridges, empowering others and creating a safer digital world.
To every woman considering a career in cybersecurity: remember that your journey is unique. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the successes and never underestimate the power of your perspective. Your ability to learn, adapt and lead will pave the way for a safer, more secure digital world.
