The Council will establish a benchmark professional standard for certified cybersecurity professionals, creating a pathway for ISC2 Members to achieve chartered practitioner status

LONDON, October 19, 2022 – ISC2 – the world’s largest non-profit association of certified cybersecurity professionals – today announced it is participating in the ground-breaking Professional Standards Pilot Program operated by the UK Cyber Security Council to establish a register of professionals up to Chartered Practitioner status.

ISC2 is one of two bodies empowered by The Council to assess applications from cybersecurity professionals to be placed on the register.

The Council is piloting a professional standard for the profession to create a universally recognised standard for cybersecurity professionals that will provide an additional layer of certainty alongside professional certifications of the skills and competencies associated with them, using a three-tier professional title system.

“The cybersecurity profession can benefit from clarity of pathway and progression for all cybersecurity professionals, from those coming into entry- or junior-level roles to seasoned professionals and business leaders,” said Clar Rosso, CEO, ISC2. “ISC2 welcomes the opportunity to work with the UK Cyber Security Council on this pilot program that aims to support employers and provide clarity and confidence in an individuals’ competence and capabilities.”

The three professional titles aligned to the Professional Standards Pilot Program can be assigned to applying professionals who are added to the register, based on factors including experience, professional development and demonstrable capability:

  • Associate
  • Principal
  • Chartered

Each level of professional title corresponds to the depth of experience and expertise of the individual and is intended to create a clear route map both into the profession and for progression within it. The approach will align the cybersecurity sector with professions such as engineering or accountancy, which already have successful similar models for defining a pathway to chartered status for professionals.
