GISLA AwardGOVERNMENT INFORMATION SECURITY LEADERSHIP AWARDS (GISLA)
The GISLA is awarded annually by the (ISC)² U.S. Government Advisory Board to four federal employees. Each category below is independent of professional certification:

Senior Non-IT Security Manager (examples include: CIO, CFO, IG, program/project manager, etc.) who has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the IT security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project, on either a government-wide or agency-specific basis within the last 12 months. Candidates in this category should occupy an SES or other senior-level position within the federal government.

Senior IT Security Manager (or senior security manager with significant IT security management responsibilities) who has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the IT security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project, on either a government-wide or agency-specific basis within the last 12 months.

Non-Managerial IT Security Professional who has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the IT security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project within the last 12 months.

Federal Contractor IT Security Professional currently supporting a federal government contract who has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the IT security workforce or whose contributions are considered critical to the implementation or management of any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project. Nominations must be submitted by a federal employee who is a co-contributor to or supervisor of the same program or initiative for which the candidate is being nominated.

Candidates for the two awards given to IT security professionals (Senior IT Manager and Non-managerial IT Security Professional) will be examined against the following criteria in which "IT security workforce" is defined as those individuals employed by the federal government, whose full-time job is IT security, in its various forms, ranging from security program management to providing security awareness and training, etc. These individuals are very likely to spend a good part of their federal government careers working in the IT security field. These awards recognize a person or team that has demonstrated leadership in advancing the status of career federal IT security workers by:

  • Their contribution to the improvement of the IT security workforce at their agency or department.
  • Their leadership role in any IT security workforce initiatives, programs or projects on a government-wide or agency-specific basis.
  • Their record of continuing involvement in IT security workforce improvement initiatives, working groups and other similar activities.

Candidates for the Federal Contractor award will be examined against the same criteria, although they are not employed directly by the federal government. In the event that a federal employee is constrained from submitting a nomination for a contractor employee, a nomination maybe initiated by another contractor employee, provided that the nomination is validated by a federal employee knowledgeable of the individual’s performance in support of agency where this individual performs his IT security duties, as specified in the contract.
