Harold F. Tipton Award
The annual (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Award recognizes an individual’s life-long contributions to the improvement of the information security field and profession. The award’s namesake, Hal Tipton, is a security industry pioneer and (ISC)² co-founder. As recipient of the 2008 Tipton award, Sandy Lambert was honored for her distinguished information security career, which has included Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) positions at Citigroup and Security Pacific Corporation. She started her security career with Security Pacific in 1976, serving as one of the few female pioneers in the industry, and was a key player in the formation of (ISC)².
Currently, Lambert runs her own consultancy serving clients worldwide. Other notable career achievements include being the first inductee into the ISSA Hall of Fame, winning theSecurE-Biz Pioneers Award in recognition of outstanding performance in securing the National Critical Infrastructure, and being listed in Who’s Who in California, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and the National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives & Professionals.
James R. Wade (ISC)²Service Award
The annual James R. Wade (ISC)² Service Award, established last year, recognizes volunteers who have made a sustained and valuable contribution to (ISC)². Any volunteer can be nominated by an (ISC)² member or by the (ISC)² Board of Directors’ Awards Committee. The award’s namesake was instrumental in making (ISC)² the organization it is today through his active and tireless volunteerism.
The inaugural (2008) recipient of the Wade Award was Randy Sanovic. Sanovic’s association with (ISC)² goes back to 1989, when he served as a member of the organization’s founding Board of Directors. His continuous service as a Board member also included terms as chairperson and treasurer. Other notable positions with (ISC)² have included chairman of the Board Audit Committee and co-chair of the Advisory Board of the Americas.
The 2009 Wade Award recipient is Ben Gaddy, current information assurance security project manager at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), who has more than 40 years of experience in the information systems field. Gaddy has been a solid contributor to (ISC)² over his career, having served as a member of the (ISC)² Board of Directors, as well as co-chair of the (ISC)² Test Development Committee and (ISC)² Test Administration Committee. He was also among the earliest individuals to obtain the CISSP credential.
Fellow of (ISC)²
The Fellow of (ISC)² was established to honor and distinguish a select number of elite information security professionals who have made outstanding contributions throughout their careers to the information security profession. Candidates are nominated by a sitting or former member of the (ISC)² Board of Directors, Fellow of (ISC)², or (ISC)² Harold F. Tipton Award winner, with the final selection determined by the sitting (ISC)² Board of Directors and are not required to hold an (ISC)2 certification. Honored this year with the Fellow of (ISC)² were Howard Schmidt and Dr. Whitfield Diffie.
Schmidt’s 40-year security career has spanned defense, law enforcement and corporate security. He currently serves as the first president and CEO of the Information Security Forum (ISF) and has had a long association with (ISC)², serving as its Security Strategist as well as sitting on a number of boards and committees. Schmidt’s resume includes previous positions as White House cyber security advisor and Chief Security Officer (CSO) for eBay and Microsoft. He is also currently the international president of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) and is active in a number of other international industry organizations, associations and boards.
Dr. Diffie’s career has been highlighted by his early 1970s recognition that cryptography, mostly a secret military field at the time, would shortly be indispensable in civilian communications. His 1975 discovery of public-key cryptography, which now underlies the security of Internet commerce, adapted cryptography to the use of open communities and created a vibrant public cryptographic community. Recently, Diffie has held the positions of manager of secure systems research at Bell-Northern Research and CSO at Sun Microsystems. He has been recognized by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology with an honorary doctorate for the creation of a new field of science and is a Fellow of the Marconi Foundation.
Founded in 1989, (ISC)² was the first organization dedicated to educating and certifying professionals worldwide to secure the networked world. With more than 60,000 members in more than 130 countries to date, (ISC)² has grown to become the largest body of information security professionals in the world.
