About the Award
The ISLA Program is held annually by (ISC)² in cooperation with the (ISC)² Asian Advisory Board to recognize outstanding leadership and achievements in the workforce improvement of IT security professionals in the Asia-Pacific region in the following categories:

  • Senior Non-IT Security Professional (examples include: CIO, CFO, program/project manager, etc.) who has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the IT security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project. Candidates in this category typically should have at least ten years of work experience and occupy a senior-level position within their organization.

  • Senior IT Security Professional (examples include: CSO, CISO, IT security manager or senior security manager with significant IT security management responsibilities) who has significantly contributed to the enhancement of the IT security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project. Candidates in this category typically should have at least ten years of work experience, seven of which are directly related to IT security.

  • IT Security Practitioner who has distinguished him/herself for implementing and/or managing the implementation of a component of a security program (examples include: managing a security awareness and training program, conducting difficult, complex security evaluations, etc.) Candidates in this category typically should have at least six years of work experience, three of which are directly related to IT security.

ISLA Criteria
The Asia-Pacific ISLA Program recognizes all candidates who meet the criteria. Additionally, (ISC)² will highlight an initiative, program or project conducted by a nominee from each of the categories above. The criteria for showcasing these initiatives are:

  • The impact the initiative, program or project had on the organization and/or community
  • How the initiative, program or project leveraged people, processes and technology for a successful implementation
  • Innovative approaches to overcoming obstacles or how the initiative, program or project built a foundation for workforce improvement in the future

Candidates for Senior IT Security Professional and the IT Security Practitioner will be examined against the following criteria in which "IT or information security workforce" is defined as those individuals whose full-time job is IT security, in its various forms, ranging from security program management, to firewall administration, to providing security awareness and training, etc. These individuals are likely to have spent a good part of their careers working in the IT security field. They will be recognized for demonstrating leadership in advancing the status of career IT security personnel by:

  • Their contribution to the improvement of the IT security workforce within their organization
  • Their leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiatives, programs or projects
  • Their record of continuing involvement in IT security workforce improvement initiatives, working groups and other similar activities
  • Their distinctive achievement, outcome or results of an information security workforce enhancement initiative outside their regular job responsibilities

Examples can include, but are not limited to:

  • Development and support for new or improved processes that incorporate and integrate security components into standard IT and business processes;
  • Designing reward, bonus, or career advancement schemes that recognize the professional achievements of IT security professionals, such as developing successful corporate training, publications and conference papers, certification, certification maintenance or superior performance in educational and training programs;
  • Outstanding contribution to successful and secure projects; and
  • New initiatives to support the professional development of IT security staff such as subsidised study for certifications, subsidised examination fees, and training and conference programs.

Nomination Process
(ISC)² members and others are strongly encouraged to nominate Asian-Pacific professionals who have contributed to the success of an information security program and to the improvement of information security workforce throughout the year. All applicants meeting the criteria will be recognized at the ISLA Gala Dinner on October 28, 2008 at the Grand Intercontinental in Seoul, Korea in conjunction with SecureKorea an (ISC)² Security Leadership Event.  SecureKorea takes place October 29-30.
